    BMW i3 Battery Upgrade Program

All i3s are Purely Electric but the BMW (parallel) hybrids aren't.

    BMW i3 Battery Upgrade Program

The ReX is purely electric. It isn't purely battery.

Rex Drive Train error; High coolant temperature

the coolant pump is electrically driven an so doesn't need the engine to be running.

Rex Drive Train error; High coolant temperature

The ReX engine coolant thermostat starts to open at 85 deg C and is fully open at 95 deg C. Above 85degC the engine coolant circuit passes heat to the electronics and motor cooling circuit which then includes the front mounted radiator. There is also an engine compt cooling fan.

Rex Drive Train error; High coolant temperature

The rpm of the ReX and the car are not related. Unless the battery State of Charge is very low then above 56mph the ReX will run at 3600rpm and produce about 20kW (18.8kWe). If the SOC drops to below 2.5% then the ReX will run up to 4300rpm and deliver 23.3kWe or in Europe 4800rpm and 25.5kWe...

BMW I3 REx vs. Audi A3 Sportback E-Tron

We tried one at the same time as the i3. Think of the e-tron as a conventional car that has an electric motor for tax benefit purposes. It doesn't have much range on electric and as soon as you want to go quickly the ICE cuts in. For slow crawl through a busy city if you don't have far to go...

    UK - which cables....?

Whilst it's better to have the 32 amp cable you can manage without it if you have a ReX - i've rarely used mine in a year. I've charged a lot at Rapids and at home I have a 32A tethered cable.

    Valuation/depreciation of i3

The i3 has stronger residuals than a BMW 3-series at the moment.

    Rex

The ReX is a generator and isn't subject to varying load from driving the car. It idles at 2400rpm for six minutes then goes to 3600rpm and 20kW. If battery SOC is very low then it will run to 4300 and 23.3kW but it's dependent on battery not driving conditions.

Glasgow to London - First trip in new car

My CCS charging is typically at 0.8kWhrs/minute up to 70% SOC (13kWHrs and 110amps) and 0.3kWHrs after that up to about 95% SOC (18kWHrs and 396v/12 amps). I normally stop at 90% SOC (17kWHrs) and 20 amps or 25-30mins.

    How does the REx work?

Are you sure it wasn't 4300rpm and not 4800rpm? Designation Unit W20K06U0 Design R2 Displacement [cm3] 647 Firing order 1-2 Bore/stroke [mm] 79/66 Power output [kW (HP)] 25(34) at engine speed [rpm] 4300 Torque [Nm (lb-ft)] 55 (40) at engine speed [rpm] 4300 Compression ratio [ε]...

    How does the REx work?

The generator is a synchronous permanent magnet machine. The ReX generates between idle speed (2200rpm/2400rpm) and a max continuous of 3600rpm with 4300rpm used at very low battery SOC. The ReX Electronics (REME) converts the generator AC to DC to charge the battery or drive into the motor...

Help: supplier for electrical machine electronics in i3

Pleasure. Would be great to know what electronics are in the EME. I've assumed that the EME is IGBT based but I've not managed to find anything that says so.

Help: supplier for electrical machine electronics in i3

The electrical machine electronics of the i3 (I01) is developed and supplied by the relevant departments of BMW AG. The production is carried out in a division of the plant in Dingolfing. Seems BMW have taken the view that IPR of the motor and drive (EME) is key to their future success. I...

REX speeds for long highway drives

You should be broadly breakeven at 20x your journey average miles/kWHrs. Code the car to turn on at 75% battery SOC. Bring up trip details on split screen - one of the lines will be the trip miles/kWHr. Drive first 25% of battery SOC and then turn on ReX. You can drive at 20x the trip...

Controlling RPM - might be useful for long distance REXing

ReX operation: • The ReX can be started and stopped manually at a SOC below 75% (except in the USA). • At <6.5% SOC the ReX will be started automatically. • Once started the ReX has a warm-up period (for the engine and catalytic converter) of about 6 minutes, depending on ambient...

Rodham. Was this precon with the latest November update software?

    November software update-observations

When the ReX first switches on it should run for about 6-minutes at 2400rpm before then ramping up to 3600rpm or 4300rpm depending on battery SOC
