Help: supplier for electrical machine electronics in i3

I'm the fan of BMW i3, and when I'm reading about i3 specification, a quesiton pops up in my head:
Who is the supplier for electrical machine electronics(EME) in i3? or this key high voltage component is produced by BMW himself?

The supplier of the EDME is Delphi Electronics Group. The Delphi designation is DCM3.8.

Thanks janner. You are right that, Delphi provides the EDME(electrical digital machine electronics) for i3, which may call it the vehicle controller, it coordinates with EME (electrical machine electronics), transmission, braking system... for the whole vehicle level control.

and EME is a very critical component in this e-powertrain system. I'm wondering who is the supplier? BOSCH, Conti, or someone else, or BMW home-made?

The electrical machine electronics of the i3 (I01) is developed and supplied by the relevant departments of BMW AG. The production is carried out in a division of the plant in Dingolfing.

Seems BMW have taken the view that IPR of the motor and drive (EME) is key to their future success. I think they're right.

Would be great to know what electronics are in the EME. I've assumed that the EME is IGBT based but I've not managed to find anything that says so.

Infineon provide 75 semiconductors ensure a highly efficient electric drive in the BMW i3, e.g. Microcontroller AUDO Future, IGBT Power Module HybridPACKTM 2, EiceDRIVERTM Products, CoolMOSTM High voltage MOSFETs.

The EME is made by BMW. I have had the rare chance to successfully repair one instead of paying $5000+ labor.

Wow, I'm impressed! How did you diagnose it and find the root cause?

Thank you. After a not very heavy front end accident the positive wire of the vacuum pump for the brakes touched the chassis. After the pump was reconnected it working all the time, even with the ignition off. After extensive testing and even programming the EME it was determined that the root cause is hardware fault in the EME control board.
I do diagnostics and electronic repairs for German cars for living, but there is no usable info for the i3 except what is provided by the factory. According to BMW, they sell the EME as a complete part and replacing it includes dropping the whole rear axle. I took my chances and was able to open the EME and remove the control board only by dropping one corner of the rear axle around 2". Of course the part that had to be replaced was not available from any sources, but after some experimenting with cross referenced parts the repair was concluded successfully.

I was able to download the photo to my Mac and zoom it in until pixelation made further zooming pointless. Unfortunately, I was unable to read the part numbers regardless of the magnification level.

The part numbers are irrelevant. They are password locked Tricore TC1797, most common processor used in automobile electronics nowadays.

I have the tools to read/write most of them. If you dont know the boot pin, I dont see a way to read it. And more important, if you dont know the source code (Fuktionsrahmen) I dont see what can you do with the dump. But the idea is tempting nevertheless.

Can you provide some details on how to open the EME module without removing it.
My car has problem with the AC charger inside EME module and I would like to try to open it from the top for diagnostics.

I dropped the left side of the motor/eme assembly by removing the bolt of the motor mount. Then disconnect the HV battery from the front service disconnector and carefully remove the HV connector(s) on the top of the EME. The rest is T20 botls to remove the cover.

Hello fellas,

In my BMW i3 rex A/C and heater don't work, that is what fault codes show, i tried to replace both A/C and heater, but no luck same problem. When i lift the car, i saw that HV cable that is connected to electric heater was damaged. When i observed the damaged part, it had black smoked color, what i assume is that there was a short circuit which damaged the EME. The thing is charging is connected to the module as well which works perfectly. I hope EME is fine, otherwise i'm screwed.

I tried to find similar problem in internet, unfortunately couldnt.

Any suggestions or fixes?

I have a G30 BMW 530e, previous repair due to side damage but now the car doesn’t drive on electric mode only on petrol.

BMW have told me to replace the EME but I have tried a second hand part which now needs coding but apparently it can’t be coded it has to be a brand new part according to BMW. It’s a £6,000 part which it’s crazy!

is there a way of coding it or flashing it to match the rest of the car? Or some sort of way around it ?
