anyone out there help me crunch the numbers to see if the i3 is going to be cheaper to own/run everyday vs normal petrol car?

don't even know where to start or how to figure that.
Since I'm new to Australia...don't really know what the normal operation cost are for a car

trying to work out if an i3 is more expensive upfront...but saves money in the long term via cheaper operating cost etc

I'm thinking the REX i3 is the way to go for me

any help is greatly appreciated!

I hardly think it's worth doing the sums on consumption, etc.
Motoring costs are dominated by depreciation unless you plan to do VERY big distances, when the fuel costs might start to match depreciation.
For example, my i3Rex is probably depreciating by at least £12/day. £12 a day would buy me around 90kWh of electricity and that would get me 306 miles a day at 3.4miles/kWh (which is what I get). Now 306X365 = 111,690 miles (180,000km) a year.
You might argue that I won't do that many miles every day, but depreciation happens whether or not I drive the car, so it's a valid comparison.
So now do you see why I claim running costs are almost irrelevant to the sums?

On the BMW website for i3 (under "finance &Insurance" ), there is a calculator for this

http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/i/i3/2013/showroom/finance_and_insurance.html#comp_calculator

For 12,000 miles per annum and assuming 12p/kWhr for electricity and £1.17 for a litre of unleaded petrol the fuel savings per year are about £1,100 (about £3/day.)

The point about depreciation is a fair one but happens to all cars. The issue is always the difference not the absolute, after all, if you're going to have a car then you're going to have depreciation.

£12/day or £4,368 as an average per year over the first three years doesn't seem unreasonable and is similar to many other premium cars. Using What Cars depreciation calculator for a BMW 328i shows £5,825 per annum or £16/day. (A Vauxhall Insignia is nearer to £19/day).

You should also save on road fund license and on servicing - maybe £300-500 per year, say £1.50 per day.

In total about £3,000 per year saving but it would be useful to see other owners calculations.
