Hi there,

On my beloved 2014 BEV with 47tkm I got the dreaded drivetrain malfunction error, relevant codes are 22280F “HV power management: HV battery, insulation fault” and 21F0E3 “Insulation monitoring - Insulation fault in the entire system (closed contactors)” Both codes have equivalents with slightly different numbers “warning” instead of “fault”

No warranty, usually fixing my cars myself, if anyone has something useful to contribute, please fire away. Past experiences with these codes, literature on the codes, all is welcome.

TIA, Ben

Found these:

"The cause of an isolation fault is generally a resistance between HV+ or HV- and the shield/chassis
ground, which is below a predetermined threshold."

"The following procedure addresses these faults when caused by a defect in the cable between the
HV battery and the EME"

Moisture in the connections of that cable, causing a Drive Train error, has come up before.

Ben, I'm at the same point with my 2015 REX with same errors, work on my own stuff and would really appreciate knowing how you made out with this issue? (BTW, I'm in central Ontario which has had a pretty wet start this winter so I can't help but think its related)

Any updates

I just got my car's codes read by the dealer and I'm looking at a printout of about 30 various codes including the one(s) listed here. A few weeks ago I ran the HV and 12V batteries down and had to 1. get towed to a charger and 2. get a jump of the 12V battery from a portable charger the two truck driver had. Not sure if that wore the 12V batter down, but my plan is to get a new one and have it installed by BMW. $192 for the batter and $294 to install and register. Then hopefully some or all of the codes go away. I have charged in the rain in the last month. I have also had the charger die (Delco brand) so I bout a new one, Vevor brand.

Any ideas / suggestions?

Wait until the new 12V battery has been installed and see if it fixes the problem?

Agree about new battery.if hi voltage fault codes come back, there was a campaign for earlier i3 about a cable under the car in the rear, that got replaced .
