First - there's a very slight delay from hit the steering wheel center to the actual horn sound that is different than any car I've ever owned ...

... and that's a lot!

sounds more like a weak, golf cart's horn

ironic since this thing is so quiet that joggers run in front of me and I have to actually honk at them!

I think the delay is in the serial message being generated, sent, computer responding and commanding the relay to activate the horn. Few of the switches in BMW's these days actually directly apply or remove power to anything...it's done by the computer. Instead of a message, it could be just a flag that has to be scanned before something actually happens.

In some markets, you can order the i3 with an optional pedestrian warning device that emits a sound when you are going slowly. Once you get going faster, it turns off, assuming you'll have enough tire noise to alert someone of your presence. It is not available in the USA, at least in the current offerings. No idea what it actually sounds like.

Elsewhere, I have suggested that BMW ditch the stupid wasted ashtray for a second-tone horn. Pathetic.
