I can't explain how hydrogen cyanide might have been produced. However, hydrogen sulfide would likely have been produced and it's as dangerous as hydrogen cyanide.
Some battery boxes are made from ABS, which degrades during combustion into constituents. Acrylonitrile's degradation products include hydrogen cyanide.

Or there might have been some PVC small parts which burned. Plastic fires aren't just smelly - they can be dangerously toxic.

Good points! I didn't consider that the battery case might have gotten so hot that some of it decomposed.
