Hi I'm waiting delivery for my i3 Rex in 2 months. My i3 will have 20 inch tires.

Does any one know how much replacement tires cost?

I'm confident that the dealership will offer me a warranty for the tires but as you know that warranty sometimes is not the best cost effective way to help you save money.

Thanks

J

Yes, tires and wheels. I think it was three years for $1400 and change plus deductible ($50/incident? can't recall precisely). Their sales pitch made the point that replacement options are limited. I knew that since Bridgestone is the only one making the sizes. And they quoted $400+ per tire. Even if true at the time (mid-May so I was among the first in the US), I figured prices would come down as supply increased. I passed on the option because I typically replace a tire due to road hazards every 2.5 years. Even using their high replacement cost, it didn't make sense financially. Now with the Tire Rack showing replacements under $150/tire (varies by size and style), I feel really good about my decision.

By the way, I'm happy to see they're stocking summer tires in the mixed 19" sizes. I'll definitely be going for them when the original all-seasons wear out.

I just hope the winter tire packages show up before they are needed! BMW does not offer them in all areas, but since some places in NA require them, my guess is that they will show up by maybe September/October at the latest. All seasons are not the best in heavier snow. Bridgestone makes two different winter tires for the car - one designed for Scandinavia, and one for most other areas...I'd guess, NA will probably get the latter.

The taller aspect ratio (especially on the 19" vs the 20") mean that the tire will be less susceptible to road damage than most other vehicles with that large of a wheel.

Good news the tires are inexpensive on tirerack.com.

Regarding risk of damage due to aspect ratio, that is only part of the equation. Remember that these tires are skinny!

My Golf uses 225/40 tyres, so a nominal sidewall height of about 90mm. Our Citroen has 215/55 so 118mm.

The i3 19" fronts are 155/70 so a sidewall height of about 108mm, the rears 105mm.

I've had damage on the Golf tyres when running over potholes or fallen branches in a storm. The Citroen, never a problem. I'd guess the i3 will sit in between them in terms of damage risk.

The (U.S.) wheel/tire warranty would probably be a good idea for someone who lives in an area with crappy, pothole-lined roads or somewhere out in the middle of the country. TireRack is awesome. I purchase all of my tires from TR, which are delivered straight to my house. I doubt if most BMW dealers and almost certainly "regular" tire places will keep them in stock unless you live in EV-friendly areas and, if they do, they will probably charge a lot of $$$ for each one.

Tom Moloughney from NJ has already had 3 punctures since May 21st!

In the US, you can order from the dealer a $1600 set of winter Nokia Hokapalaka (sp?) tires and wheels, but I haven't seen what the wheels look like (BMW brand). I'm not fond of those one-winter wonders and would opt to Euro brands, including GoodYear or other major brand via Tire Rack as we near winter. Checking last month, they had no clue on availability.

I have had very good experience with Goodyear German snows on my 545is 6 spd. Michelin Alpins were OK too.

Nokian does not make a suitable tire for the i3 (at least from their website www.nokiantyre.com). As far as I can tell, at least for now, the only company that makes tires in the required size is Bridgestone. This may change as more i3s end up being built and sold, but they do make two different winter tires for the vehicle. But, the US dealers do not list any of them yet for the i3.
