Hi all,

I've been lurking here for ages, so decided to register and contribute. I had my i3 charge point installed in the garage about two weeks ago, arranged by Schneider. They did a great job, and the installation took just shy of 4 hours. Interestingly, as well as the Wallbox, they also put what looks like an additional breaker, and a box with a sim which communicates with BMW.

I've "hopefully" attached to photos to this post, by following the excellent guide on this forum explaining the process (thanks I33t)

Cheers
Chris

The SIM communicates with OLEV (government office / quango) not BMW, it is a condition of getting the grant toward your installation. They will collect data on charging habits. The breaker is to comply with the wiring regulations. Looks a tidy install, where will the car be parked relative to the charger? See my earlier comments regarding my installation.

Hi Atommad,

Thanks for the extra info re: OLEV. As for the positioning of the car, it was placed such that either parking forward or backward in the garage the charging cable would reach. The installer had a diagram of suitable/recommended placement of the charger, and this position seemed to satisfy both.

Hi again,

Just for clarity I quickly sketched the position of the garage, car and charger. The charger is in blue, and the cable will be able to reach either position regardless of whether the car is parked front facing or rear facing.

I'll be able to confirm all this in the next month or so :)

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris

Your location looks ideal for reversing in.

When you drive in to the garage you are going to have to leave enough clearance on the right hand side to be able to get out of the car (although you could slide across to the passenger side) , and to be able to walk between car and wall to plug it in. I am not sure whether your double garage has a central pillar at the entrance or not, if so that would make it more difficult.

Ours is a double garage with the charger installed centrally at the far end, this allows us to charge when driven/reversed on the left side of the garage, or just reversed on the right side of the garage. It would not allow driven in on right side of the garage.
