There is no requirement to give a reason, let alone a "specific reason", when renewing VED.

There is neither any reason to tell the truth, nor to tell lies. The system permits it, and the rules don't prohibit it.
If you renew every month that will be fine for obvious reasons.

My i3 runs out 1 May - I will be renewing on the 1 March before the new rate starts in April . You are allowed to renew 2 months early if providing a letter explaining this. For example, I will be submitting a letter to the DVLA explaining that I am away for work and will not be a round to renew on it's appointed date and will be providing proof of this. Any earlier is not allowed.

If you apply to renew more than 2 months earlier than your current expiry date, you will be questioned and/or denied unless you have, how did I put it? A "specific reason".

That's not the case on line. I "renew" every month - for twelve months! I don't need to provide any false information. It flags up that I still have ten/eleven months left but I can still get a fresh 12 months worth without any problem at all. You may need special dispensation if you want to renew early without losing any payment made for the previous year but as a BEV costs nothing that's obviously not an issue in this case.

I concur with this. I have already renewed twice in the year just to check and will be doing so in March. @mfogarty isn’t correct about needing to provide evidence. You don’t. If you are already paying a fee you can still renew early but it just warns you that you are not getting a refund of any unused period. So most people wouldn’t do that. As we don’t need a refund on our £0 we just press ‘proceed’ acknowledging that we are forfeiting the refund (of £0). I’ve done it twice. No need for lies or omissions it just works.

My guess is that taxes on petrol pay for road maintenance. Since your car doesn't use petrol, they have to get the taxes out of you a different way.
It’s the UK way of registering a vehicle with an owner. We pay tax on petroleum too. It’s the same as your licence plate tags fee - renewed each year?

If you try and register earlier then your due date you will have to provide a specific reason as to why you are doing so. Telling the truth may not go down so well!
That’s not the case. Completed twice in that last year on 2 different BEVs and have a diary entry for all my family to do same on 1st March. If it changes I’ll flag it here.

Quietly stopping the black hole being filled with BEV VED revenue.

Recently bought i3 ReX 67 plate. Fuming to be told after the completed sale, Annual Road Tax is £120.
Just really don't understand. Any suggestions as to why this might be? If that can be changed?
Friends have full petrol cars and pay either nothing or £20 a year!
Many thanks
Andrew
Buying a REX dated after 31 March 2017 probably not good value in VED terms. UK. Also if its original price was more than £40k there was a 5 year surcharge. Maybe that’s it?

You're referring to a completely different case than what is being described here.

What we are doing is, in effect, relinquishing the tax that we have already "paid" (at zero rate) and "paying" for another year (at zero rate), overlapping with the existing one.

If you do that, let me assure you that you don't have to provide a reason, specific or otherwise. They don't provide any option to give one so you don't have to lie (and you don't get an opportunity to tell the "truth" either).
