Hi,

I've joined the i3 needing an eme replacement club. 2014 60ah bev AC fast charge only.

I've found a rex eme. Part numbers are different for bev and rex models. Does anyone know what the differences are?

I'd like to use parts from rex eme to rebuild mine though I'm not sure what the difference is between the two, I guess maybe an input from the rex generator.

Thanks.

Hi, in theory the "motherboard" what you need to keep, the rest is interchangeable. All the charging functions are managed by the KLE, and passed to the EME based on the observed data. This is how I understand the process description on ISTA. Make sure the EME what you want to use as donor, is for a 60Ah version. I'm also in the club ;))

Hi, I'm in a similar position, I've got a Rex as a donor car which has had the front end parts removed to repair another damaged one before I bought it.

I'm in a dilemma, remove all the front end and windscreen from a BEV to fit to a rex or if I could get the eme to work in the BEV it would mean a lot less work. Has anyone actually made the Rex to BEV EME move with success?

The more important question is the age of the two car. I guess you didn't mention it because they are close, so let's not talk about that. You are actually in a privileged position, as you have the two EME in "hand". From that point, you just need to compare the two units. There are several video guides on Youtube, but ISTA also has great diagrams and descriptions. Also I presume you wouldn't swap the two complete unit's anyway, unless you can "virginize" the new one (and then you are much more advanced than myself), so the motherboard swap is essential. It sounds dumb, and probably it is, so don't blame me. This is actually what I'm going to do once I've get my hands on the replacement, because I couldn't find anyone who keen to share some hands on experience. It's awful lot of work to remove them, but once you have the two unit side by side... that's the easy part (the chance are there to not match though) .
In your case, the other option also a valid consideration. If there is no structural damage, then swapping body parts are much easier.

Thanks for your response RP67

My vehicles are 2013 and 2014 models.

Unfortunately I only have the EME in the Rex model which although has no front end can still be driven and the Rex engine also runs. The front subframe is bent but has front wings and everything backwards.

The BEV model which would be my preferred choice is complete I think all but the EME. When I bought it the motor was in the back seat so I've spent a bit of time putting the bits back that had been removed.

So disappointingly I cannot do any eme comparisons. I'm coming to the conclusion that I need to aquire a BEV EME to make a start. Because of the age finding a BEV that will work seems more tricky to find too. There's more available from 2019 models onwards but I suspect these will not be compatible.

If anyone has had any success in a similar circumstance please let me know, it would be much appreciated.

It's gonna be tricky, because you cannot program the secondhand EME to your car. It has to be "cleaared"/"virginized" in order to install. It is a very complex task and requires lot more specific equipment to do it (not just an OBD cable if you know what I mean...).

Yes I do know what you mean.

I'm in 2 minds. With the 3/4 rex I have would be a good solution for someone in a similar position as me as I could sell the eme and other modules that mean no virginising (made up word I'm sure) would be needed and they could be fitted as a job lot to cure the issue. I could do with a similar BEV setup to purchase too, that would be the ideal.

Obviously the eme is linked to the immobiliser module and keys but maybe there's others that need to go along with the bundle. Perhaps someone will know.

Maybe that shop in the U.K. that advertises rebuilding EME's would be able to advise on the differences between a REx and BEV EME and what might be needed to convert one from another. Or maybe they would consider swapping one type of EME for another.
Thanks for the input, yes I've been in communication with Peter but the hard reset of the control boards to allow coding it to a new vehicle is something they've stopped doing due to reliability issues. He said they can be bricked etc.

Some good news and some not so good news but it may help others in the future.

Today I took the rex eme inverter from my i3 and put it on the Bev version I have that has no EME module. So the good news is that my 60 Odd errors have been reduced to only 6 according to the scan I ran...... But the centre display showed the word hybrid on it so I'm guessing it knows it's not correct for the car. Additionally it will not charge but I'm guessing that because it's not coded to the car may be the reason. Hope this helps someone before they go to the same trouble I have :)

I guess that is good and bad news.

So you didn't clear the ISN from your rex eme before you put it in the bev i3?

I think all the coding info is on the logic board. Swapping that will get around the coding and isn problem. Hopefully that is the case.

Internally rex and bev eme are the same, so it is just coding.

At least that's what I hope is the case as I'm about to do the swap in a week.

No, at the moment I've not found either the software or anyone with the ability to clear the ISN. I hope you are correct and it is just coding. It's a shame I cannot find a BEV EME module. It may have been useful for someone in my situation with a Rex i3 because I could supply the module set and keys which would mean the car would work from the get go.

Well the other option from you is to sell the components of the EME. The logic boards aren't the ones that break, so supplying ac/dc boards would let people replace that board while still keeping the rest of the EME that matches the vehicle it was in.
