Is there a way to crank up the REX without running the battery down to the point where the REX kicks in automatically? Thanks. Hal

Yes, but you have to code it to do that. In my opinion, the easiest way is to get the BimmerCode app and one of their WiFi dongles (I already had a WiFi Thor module for N54 Flasher) or get the Veepeak OBD Bluetooth dongle. Both have worked great for me. The app made it a breeze to code the Range Extender menu to be visible. Then once the battery is below 75% you can tell it to turn on the REx. I set it to shortcut button number 8 and it’s easy to turn on when on the highway or wherever.
