There must be better ways of avoiding accidents than taking away one of the advantages of EVs - that of near silent operation at low speed. The EU thinks not:

hmmm... the beginning of the end of EV when Brussels start regulating... I think making an ev sound like a gas car is mental. If anything they should be made to sound like an EV... Maybe some kind of sound below say 20mph, and activated by the driver following a warning from the car. Imaging driving through a quiet neighbourhood with your silent electric car making loud vroom vroom noises..lol... mental!

I don't see this as a bad news though.

Any kind of standardisation could be good in this case. The fact of having or not having a security feature like a low speed alerting system should not become a sales argument. Any VE should have one.

My 2012 Plug-in Prius (U.S.) generates a warning noise when driving in EV under 15 mph. It's a fairly quiet humming noise, rather like an angry llama.

(I know, that's not helpful. But it's not often one gets to show off one's knowledge of llamas, which hum gently when annoyed.)

I find this quite useful as I live on a twisty road favored by bicyclists. I don't have to worry that they can't hear me.

(I do worry that they'll think I'm a llama and ignore me.) :)
