New here and hoping some of the BMW i3 brain trust can lend a hand.

I’m working on a Mini Cooper SE rebuild project and hit a snag with the head unit. The part number on my current unit is 65-12-5-A7A-178, and unfortunately, it’s fried. I’ve got access to ISTP, but I’m not exactly a pro at using it, and finding details on this specific part number has been next to impossible.

Here’s what I’m curious about:
  • Are there compatible part numbers that would work for my setup?
  • eBay has a bunch of Mini head units that look almost identical but come with different part numbers. Would one of these work if it has the same connector?
  • Could I reprogram a unit with extra features (like HUD) to match what I actually have?

I’m hoping someone here has had experience with part swapping or can give tips on which units might be compatible with some coding adjustments.

1. Yes, I think you will succeed on this one. I don't know any other details, though.
2. As long as it has the same connector, yeah, it might. Just check for model-specific features, as some head units support HUD, GPS, or additional audio outputs that your SE may not support without extra coding.
3. I can't help you with this one...sr.

When retrofitting upgraded factory Mach sound system in an old Sable some years ago, I found a number of the eBay used HU/amp vendors quite helpful with advice on what parts to get.

Some of the threads here about e.g. replacing pre-LCI X3 taillights with the LCI "Halo" style ones report that although the connectors are physically the same, BMW swapped around some of the pinouts so minor rewiring of the connectors is necessary for proper function.

You can check part numbers for mini's @ Realoem.com
Check for different models and see if they are the same part number.
