Jim, do you think that an i3 calculates its battery pack's charge level by its voltage which is also dependent on temperature and load, and which varies very little over a wide range of charge levels in the middle of its charge level range? That seems quite error-prone. Might keeping track of current flows in and out of the battery pack be used instead which is how my Honda Insight hybrid calculates its battery pack's charge level?

The current capacity of the battery will change based on the temperature. LiOn batteries are much more stable in voltage with temperature changes than most other types. Seeing how most other things on the i3 are engineered, I highly doubt it is a simplistic algorithm. IOW, while you could calculate how much power was used, but the overall capacity available to use will also change, so it can get quite complex to give a very accurate value of what's left, or how much you can put in during recharging.
