Hi all,

Greetings from the UK.

Been lurking on the forums for a while now. I've got a build date of week 2, and a delivery of week 4 on a Solar Orange i3 REX. Can't wait.

Cheers
Chris

Hi Chris
Similar spec to mine, (colour, wheels, sunroof, winter,LED) looking forward to seeing it.
You might be being a little optimistic with week 4 delivery - mine is week 52 build (now!) and estimated delivery to me week 3 or 4. The delivery date you have may be to the UK then it will need transport to your dealer and then a couple of days PDI.
Good luck.

Hi Paul,

You're probably right. From what you say, it may be early February, but I can still hope :)

Chris.

Mine is also a week 52 build and I am hoping to pick it up sometime week commencing Jan 27th. Mine is a BEV in Solar Orange with Suite Interior, Winter Package, Turbine Wheels, Sunroof, Cold Weather Prep, LED lights, Prof Nav and Harman Kardon. Still can't decide whether to order a set of winter tyres. At £1500 a set it is probably cheaper just to take taxis or public transport on the odd snowy day.

The trick of winter tyres is that they are meant for just that: "winter", and not particularly for snow. The rubber compound used differs from summer and all season tyres so that they retain traction when temperatures drop below 8 degrees C. The tread pattern is also more flexible to aid traction in water and snow. When it really snows you'll need snow chains to keep going but they limit your maximum speed to about 35mph (50kmh).
But in those conditions, it's better not to travel at all! :ugeek:

I agree with what you say - I have a set of winter tyres for my little Fiat Panda 4X4 (soon to be sold when i3 arrives) and my wife has a set for her Mercedes E Class and we definitely notice better traction when the temperature starts dropping. Do you think the unusual tyre size makes winter tyres even more important for the i3?

You must be kidding  For me it would ment - don't use your car in between of November till Aprill.

I have ordered winter tires on separate set of wheels but I suspect these tires will be no good in real winter. Studds are unfortunately the only solution.

Well actually the tyre size is not really as unusual as it seems! Back in the '50's 2CV's were equipped with similar wheels and tyres and have unusually good bad weather driving characteristics because of them! (We drive a few 2CV's so we know this first hand!)

The large wheel diameter provides a bigger fore/aft footprint which compensates the smaller width. The most important factors For the i3 are the huge amount of torque acting on the rear wheels and that the car is relatively light so that aquaplaning could set in suddenly at higher speeds.

Sorry, I was assuming Northwestern European weather, road conditions and road preparation!

Having lived in Canada, I know first hand that "normal" winter tyres there have studs and that salt is useless (too cold!) so split gravel is used to prepare the road surface in the winter. All of these things are either illegal or not practical in NL/D/B/UK/F!
