Gear selector getting warm / hot

BMW couldn't be bothered to fit a heated steering wheel to an i3, so they decided that a heated gear selector would suffice.

I've read other reports of a warm gear selector which isn't easy to explain because there shouldn't be much current flowing through it.

Checked mine today - yes, after a 40 minute drive, the body of the gear selector is quite warm - almost hot.
