Autoline is a show that manages to be both boring and interesting at the same time. Here it is at its best with a discussion of the current battery market with actual participants as opposed to pundits.

One quick takeaway: LG thinks a 200 mile EV for under $35k by 2017 is a very solid expectation.

Also: a 6lb gallon of gasoline creates 19.9lbs of CO2 once you run it through an ICE.
 
Battery tech hasn't had the research dollars that the ICE has had over many years, but there is a big interest now since the EPA has mandated the significant increases in corporate average fuel economy. There have been some advances, and more are to be expected. What works in the lab needs to be scaled up so it can be produced reliably. There's some interesting stuff with nano-technology WRT batteries that increases both the energy in and out significantly and at greatly increased rates.
