I have my second check engine light.

I have a 2017 i3 REX.

The car is pretty much perfect.

Had a failure of the Fuel Purge Valve three weeks ago.
I think that it may have happened again.

Any suggestions?

The dealers is going to give me a loaner to drive.
This valve would cost approximately $180.00 out
of warranty.

The fuel tank is partially full. I have not added any
fuel for a while.

Thanks,

/s/ Tom Milam, Jr.

Our check engine light was going on and off last winter starting in January. I thought it was due to the cold. Dealer said it wasn't serious but to take a photo next time it happened. Had dealer look at it during regular service in June. Dealer said it was a software issue. Hasn't happened again in 3 1/2 months.

Asked as mine comes on if I use the REX for a long time. Seems to be associated with condensation and the light disappears after the engine has cooled down.

I forgot to mention this item.

The warning light came on while the REX unit was running.

The first time, it was a fuel purge valve.

Scheduled in on Monday. Will know more then.

The car is running perfectly.

Did you check the oil level?

My check engine light was low oil and it would come on only on braking or a turn (i.e., a high-G motion.)

Thanks for the tip.

Will check it now.

Question. Car is brand new.
Would not they have checked it when delivered?

Mine came on while the REX was running.
It has stayed on.

Dealer is going to look at it on Monday morning. I will let you know the updates.

The car is amazingly quick in traffic.

My 2017 i3 REX is in the shop for the 2nd time.

Both times, threw an engine warning light, when running the REX unit.

Apparently, it is something called a Fuel Surge Valve. The service deparment gave me some good news. Apaprently, the valve part number has changed. They are hoping that they valve has been changed and updated.

Other than these minor items, the car has been perfect.

Please don't feel sorry for me.
They gave me a brand new X5 to drive in the interim.

My CEL went on today too after running with Rex for 10 mins.

Did you check if the oil level was the cause?

Just got my i3 back from the dealer.

The fuel purge valve failed again.
They suggested, that I am overfilling the tank.

Not sure about that.
Both times, the light came on when the REX was running and the tank was half full.

I noted your idea about the oil level.
I will go check it again.
Just to make sure.

Tom

If you continue to add fuel after the automatic shutoff operates, you're asking for trouble. I think you can get fuel into the pressurization pump and/or purge valve. It should only see vapors, not liquids. It's tempting on such a small tank to get it as full as possible, but the shutoff should be a clue that you should stop.

I have tried to be careful. The last time the valve went out,
the tank was half full.

Wish me luck.

Good News. The i3 back and is operating perfectly.

This is a guess, but the failure may not be immediate if you overfill the tank and get gasoline potentially where it shouldn't go...so, the level when you notice the failure is not the issue, it's how full you made it the last time you did fill it up. IOW, stop filling when the pump shuts off, and don't try to 'top it off' further.

Great news

I just ran my REX for the third time.
No engine fault light.

My guess, this last valve was an improvement.

UPDATE; three days later.

Still perfect.
Tested the REX.
Everything good

Follow on message.

No further problems with the REX unit.

They replaced the Fuel Surge Valve with a new part.

Apparently, it works well.

NO PROBLEMS
