I think it more likely that they are working on an 'Apple' self-driving platform. Kranz left his role at BMW to co-found self-driving startup Canoo. The Tesla execs Apple has been hiring are from the self-driving software development team. Think along with the Apple CarPlay module added to the car at manufacture, will be the 'Apple CarDrive' module.

They also hired the former head of Porsche Chassis development. Could be an interesting car!
