To all lease owners: Do you wish you had bought instead?

Given that BMW Financial Services is offering a $0.16 per mile rate to purchase extra miles on the car, its really, really hard to justify purchasing, even if you plan on keeping the car 6 or more years. Use the following for your analysis: How many miles are you going to drive in 6 years...

    Gotta love these running costs...

Wow, sorry I touched a nerve. The whole point of the post was to say that yes, I believe that maintenance will be lower (sorry - not enough history on EV's to actually know what the ratio will be, lets see in 3-5 more years when enough real-world data has been collected), but categorically...

    Gotta love these running costs...

Nice in theory. We have zero practical experience to back this up. There is no question an EV is simpler, and that almost assuredly means lower maintenance. But that really only applies to the power train (engine/transmission for an ICE, battery/motor for the EV). The EV might even be 95%...

Home Charging / Tracking Sessions for Business Expenses

I think free level 2 at grocery stores, malls, maybe movie theatres will be around for a while. They can be considered a marketing expense, used to attract new customers. They don't really cost that much to put in, probably well under $10K, and the electricity that is consumed is measured in...

    Gotta love these running costs...

I agree that maintenance will be lower on an EV, but it still does exist. Currently the industry seems to be thinking roughly 30% lower maintenance. That may improve over time, but these are still mechanical beasts with tires, brakes, hydraulics, suspension, and myriad internal components that...

    GOM range algorithm

If you have a destination set in the Nav, it can make an enormous difference in what hte GOM displays. Last weekend I drove up into the mountains in Colorado and while I had 100+ miles on the GOM when I started (I had been driving pretty slow running errands the night before), as soon as I put...

    GOM range algorithm

It doesn't just use the average from the last 18 miles, it uses samples from that period. Also, the outside temp, the inside temp, the heating/cooling load and the terrain (if you have a destination set) are all factored in. In my own experience, I can generally explain whether its high or low...

    Speed up on small hops?

I beleive the deactivation of acceleration (and regenerative braking) when the wheels lose grip - like when going over train tracks - is a direct result of real-world situations where the drive-shaft was getting sheared. The motor in the car is very powerful, and if the wheels lose grip, it can...

THIS CAR SUCKS! - HAD IT 10 MONTHS, JUST GOT 42 MILES!

3.0 mi/kWh is extremely low for the i3. I drive in comfort, on a lot of hills and relatively short distances with a REx in CO in the summer (95 today, lots of sun, A/C on 70 or 72) and I get 4.2 or so. Sounds like you need to get it checked out.

Install EV Charger at home or not

Any EVSE will charge your car. The BMW-branded unit is at the top of the price list, and you can find the features it has for at least $300 less with other brands. Check out this link for a good overview. http://www.plugincars.com/quick-guide-buying-your-first-home-ev-charger-126875.html The...

[Coding] i3 / i8 always start in ECO PRO mode?

People have been searching for the appropriate option on the i3, but to date, no one has found a way to change the default drive mode.

    DC charging, how fast?

From what I've read, once you get to 80%, the DCFC ramps down and its no faster (and may even be slower) than a standard L2 charger. There are good reasons why some of the units shut off after 30 minutes, as you are getting zero benefit from DCFC vs L2 after 30 minutes, and likely (if you are...

    I3 Facebook group

I actually tried the experiment yesterday before posting, and I was able to successfully create a gmail account without entering my phone number, and then used that gmail account to create a facebook account, where I definitely did NOT enter a phone number, just the e-mail I had just created. I...

About to pull the trigger...questions for owners before leas

backup camera is only available as part of parking assist package, unfortunately. In the next couple of years it will be required, but you can't get it today without springing $1000 for the whole parking package. As for range that janner posted, that would have to be battery only (I have a REx...

About to pull the trigger...questions for owners before leas

Active battery management has been there from the start. Its on all models. You asked about range on the REx. To clarify what has been stated, range on battery alone with the REx is going to be 65-85 miles in the summer, depending on your speed (the i3 isn't real aerodynamic and the range...

    I3 Facebook group

https://www.facebook.com/groups/BMWi3/ Not trying to pull anyone away from this forum. Its extremely helpful. The facebook group is very, very active, however, and there are many questions and information that are posted and resolved there that I never see show up here. You are right...

    I3 Facebook group

It comes up repeatedly that the Facebook group is a great resource. There are also many poeple that won't use Facebook for valid reasons, primarily privacy concerns. In case anyone is on the fence, its completely possible to use Facebook solely for the i3 group without providing any personal...

    DVDinMotion or CodeMyCar

Its really a personal choice of which hassle you can tolerate better. For me, the flexibility of doing anything I wanted outweighed the ease of DVDInMotion (and the fact that you have a very limited set of changes that they can make). I've done the coding myself (and have had to re-code after...
