I don't understand why BMW doesn't use the airco system (compressor + evaporator + condenser + expansion valve) also as a heatpump system by just adding a 4 way-valve.
It saves the cost, weight and space for an extra system. And not te be forgotten, the electricity consumption of a resistance heater!
The valve takes care of "reversing the flow of coolant".
Of course some design details have to be considered for the evaporator and condenser, but I would expect something like this on a premium electric car.
It's not any new or unusual technique.
I have it in the domestic heat pump system for my house.
Just a flip of a switch turns the heatpump from heating to cooling mode (Mitsubishi Zubadan).
For details about my heatpump see my (Dutch) website: http://geen-energierekening-meer.weebly.com/warmtepomp.html
