My search revealed lots of threads on replacing the oil filter, none on replacing the cabin air filter (or microfilter as BMW likes to call it).

The dealer wants $250 for this, which seems absurdly high since it involves one tool. On the other hand, YouTube videos that explain how to do change seem to say that installing the new air filter is fussy at best, since it must be slid in to a tight opening and then pushed down. The basics seem easy enough, just getting the new one to go in seems to be the issue.

Does anyone have any pro tips on this?

Be thankful that you have a left hand drive car! There's a bit more messing about to do on a RHD model. But I've done mine and it's not (IMO) any more complex than the YT videos suggest. I think I paid the equivalent of $20 for the pair of filters, so you can save a lot of money for a small amount of DIY...
