If you are holding the button down to lock the car, this triggers the Panic Mode, so don't do that. Just click the button on the fob and release.
If that was not the problem, try pressing the lock button twice in a row. This disables the interior motion sensor alarm which may be the problem.

If you have something plugged into the OBDII diagnostic port under the dash, this can also cause the alarm to go off. Sometimes a Dealer will plug something in there, or an Insurance company will install something. If something is plugged in, it may be that they plugged it in above the panel and then extended the port down to where it is supposed to go, so you might not see it.

It is also possible that your 12v battery is failing, the alarm randomly going off is one of many signs

Everytime I lock the doors using the key fob the alarm goes off ? I don't know what to do ... any suggestions greatly appreciated
If your i3 has the Comfort Access option, does locking the doors by touching the ribs on the door handle also trigger the burglar alarm?

EvanstonI3 has listed several possible explanations. However, I haven't read that a long press of the lock button triggers the alarm. By default, a long press or the lock button should close open windows and an open moonroof, if so equipped. However, a previous owner might have modified the behavior of the fob buttons which can be done using BimmerCode, so a long press of the lock button could trigger the alarm if it was modified to do so.
