I wonder why this was never an option on the i3 REX?

Announced in 2020, roughly - the i3's design is a decade too old for that. I think it's fair to assume that they stopped any new design work on the i3 at around the time the LCI revisions were through the design stage (2017, probably?), because they must have known that the i3 was not going to continue by then.
