Hi, I had initially thought about purchasing the BMW charging unit for my recently ordered i3. I found out the BMW charger requires a 40A line, and since I only have access to a 30A line, I need something else. The Power Xpress was recommended because it can work on a 30a line (the amperage can adjust from 12-30a).

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the Power Xpress? Here's a link to the product page: http://www.pluginnow.com/power-xpress

Any other recommendations for a charger that will work on a 30A line?

Thank you,
ADM

Clipper Creek units seem to be well respected around here, and they make various power levels. This one works on a 25A line:

I installed a 40A circuit to accommodate the 7kW HCS-40, and should soon have an i3 to try it out on...

Probably all units that can charge the i3 at its maximum rate will require at least a 40A circuit, but only draw about 30A in the process. You cannot run a circuit at it's max level per code, and would typically risk the CB from tripping, thus the 40A, and running it as 75% of max. Any plug-in unit has to have the wiring sized for the series plug you are using, and there are no 30A or 40A rated plugs, which is why units that plug in beyond 20A, require one of the 50A plugs and wiring, even though they don't draw that much. A plug must be wired to accept any standard device with that plug (you might plug in your dryer or a welder, or who knows what).

The vehicle can request less out of a charger, but the charger itself must be wired for ITS capabilities, not the vehicles.

I am using the BOSCH PowerXpress charger with my I3 - at 30A and on a 30A line. Works perfect and pretty fast. I have selected "high" charging rate in the car's charging menu.

I wouldn't brag about this if I were you. 30A continuous load on a 30A circuit is not only a violation of the NEC, but dangerous. NEC demands at least a 37.5 amp circuit for a continuous 30 amp load, hence the 40 amp realistic circuit requirement. Our collective wishes that your house does not catch fire...

I have fused the PowerXpress to 30A and it does not trip the circuit breaker while. My installation was done by a certified electrician and also got approval from the local code enforcement officer. I do not believe that there is any violation or risk whatsoever and really can recommend the use of the PowerXpress for charging the I3, specifically with the selector in option "5".

All wired products are required to be installed per the manufacturer's requirements and they require a 40A dedicated breaker and associated wiring when hard-wiring their 30A unit. http://www.pluginnow.com/sites/default/files/EL-50600-7-1%20REV%20B.10172013.pdf#overlay-context=power-xpress So, both the electrician and the inspector don't have a clue - your install does not meet code. Now, if the WIRING to the fuse is rated at 40A and it has a 40A breaker or fuse back at the panel, then, it should be safe, but still does not meet the manufacturer's instructions.

This is not rocket science.

I'm using the clipper Creek charger for my i3.

Works perfectly.

It actually seems to charge a little faster than commercial units I have tried in public places.
