Hi. I am based in London and a very happy new I3 driver. a caparis white with suite interior , professional Nav and Cruise control. I have a 20!mile return trip commute through very slow central London. I know that the range reading on the dash is dependant on temperature a driving style. Despite preconditioning it starts the day at 63 miles.

How accurate is this ?
I this what your pure electric shows ?
I am using the Pure wall ox to charge at home.
Is this a fact of life and do I accept that the advertised 80 is a myth?

Thanks in advance for the advise.

60+ is normal in these temperatures. 80+ in summer. Today at about 3C I'm actually getting a little over 70 in gentle urban and extra-urban with moderate traffic. Slow stop-start London traffic will probably be worse.

Did a small journey today Bromley Via M25 to Clacket Lane Services then on to Ide Hill, back home. Drove in Pro at 60 mph on the M25 heating set at 20 C, got home after 59 miles with 16 miles of range remaining having started with 58 miles. Can only suggest you try your journey and if worried drop into Eco Pro + mode.

Higher speeds are more of an impact than stop and go traffic as long as you don't play boy racer each time. Learn to use the go pedal to coast, and if you can avoid using the brakes at all, you're a good ways towards maximizing your range. The range estimate is based on the last 18-miles or so of your driving, and your next driving could be very different. It does adjust itself as you go based on what you are doing now. I've driven nearly 10-miles and not seen the range indicator go down on occasion because of different conditions. If you have the opportunity, precondition the car - this uses the power from the wall (assuming it is plugged in!) to warm things up verses the batteries. That by itself could save maybe 8-miles of range based on what I've seen when it's cold. And, if you start with the car already warm (or cool in the summer), it's more comfortable to consider using EcoPro or EcoPro+ mode, since those limit the climate control in stages. The seat heaters (if you have them) are more efficient than warming the entire interior. BMW says running the a/c is more efficient above 30mph than running with the windows open because they add more drag than the power required to cool the car (assuming you're not trying to make it like a refrigerator inside!).

If you're driving just 20 miles before you can plug in, I would concentrate on the charge level shown in the bar display (and/or app) and ignore the guess o'meter.

Here's my experience: I average 12 miles or so a day in the city and charge when I reach the 50% level. That works out to every third or fourth day. Pretty consistent since I took delivery in May. The only thing that's changed is the range estimate. During the summer I was seeing mid 70s to low 80s. But the last few months I've been getting mid to upper 60s. The variable doesn't make sense because I seem to be using the same percentage of charge each day. My consumption also remains at 4.0 mi/kWh. Temperature can't be that much of a factor since I'm in San Francisco proper. We average in the high 60s during summer and high 50s in winter. In fact, our warmest months usually are September and October, held true in 2014, yet my predicted range then was still lower than July/August. My conclusion is that the BMW algorithm has too much seasonal weighting. So I just ignore the range estimate since I'm won't come close to using a full charge in a single day. Instead, I picked the percentage where I need to recharge. For me, 50% works because I'll have a full charge in the morning even though I'm stuck with L1 in my condo's shared underground garage. I've also stopped bothering with pre-conditioning. It just didn't seem to make a difference in my overall consumption.
