Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

I bet someone will establish a business of seriously modifying or replacing EV batteries as the number of EVs increase and owners of older EVs with older battery tech want upgrades. (“See a need, fill a need”) (didn’t this slogan come from some movie?) Just like about everything else in most...

Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

Great ideas! Except when a kid pulls into the garage with a ferrous bike wearing some ferrous metal objects and a switch malfunctions leaving the induction charge on. Yes that’s an extreme situation, but “almost” anything is possible. How long does it take to charge my EV at home? Most of the...

Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

And I still “love” my i3-REX even though it has “crap” range in the winter here in MN. Just a different mindset in planning trips. As I mentioned I’m still going to buy a Tesla (probably a Model Y) or a Chevy Equinox EV. My experience with the cost savings has been great!

Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

Everyone I know who started driving an EV and experienced the cost savings over gas have commented to me: “I wish I would have tried it sooner”. Most people I know don’t drive their EV on long trips. A neighbor who did on a longer trip (his Bolt) from Minneapolis are to middle of Nebraska, and...

Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

You’re right, the Chinese Government does subsidize their businesses no different than here in the USA the government subsidizes industry in many ways. How about the government remove one of the biggest corporate welfare schemes here: The oil depletion allowance of 1916”. Then gasoline can...

Dealer won't honor California battery 10 year warranty

I don’t know if your 2016 REX is covered under California CARB laws, but here are a couple of screen shots from my app. (“MyBMW”) - my 2017 i3-REX (I was informed by both BMW and CARB reps BEV is NOT covered by CARB extended warranty) It MUST have been ORIGINALLY titled in a CARB state or is...

Why EV's won't be taking over gas cars anytime soon in the USA.

If “President Elon” gets his way, I hope he can reduce the welfare of the Oil Depletion Allowance of 1916. Petrol and Coal should be free market. If it’s $10 a gallon, so be it. It’s time to develop and use nuclear power (Like Vogtle 3 and 4 - new reactors turned up last year in Georgia) Yes -...

What Car Did You Drive Before Going Electric

I daily drive a BMW 2017 i3 REX (had it going on 5 years now)(“love” the thing!) Own: BMW 2017 i3 REX (runnng NBT-EVO/ID6 with ATM telematics module)(and ATM works with connected drive) Datsun 1978 280z (wife original owner) (parked in my garage - hardly drive it) MB 2022 GLE 350 4matic -...

    BMW i3 FIRE

Hello Saw your post to me. My BMW didn’t catch fire. I have a 2017 REX and all recalls and service bulletins are current. Sorry to hear about your fire. I watch my REX pretty carefully, and if there’s even a “wisp” of a problem, I’ll bring it to the stealership under warranty. (CA original...

    Emergency fuel can for frunk

I thought about buying a tank too. I would NOT buy any plastic or metal can which fits the frunk. I’d make a “fuel cell” (a real one - lattice inside included) so if there was a frontal collision, the thing wouldn’t explode if only partially full - No guarantees but better than a container full...

2019 i3s AC Compressor Failure, $4k+, Extremely Disappointed

Bravo! Hold the Stealership to the fire and also BMW N.A. “Knowledge is power” (backed up by the legal system) My i3 REX vehicle was originally registered in California. (One of the qualifiers for additional CARB coverage)

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

I had a 3G TCU replaced with a new 4G TCU (TCB, telematics module, etc etc) 1 month before my warranty ended almost 3 years ago. In my area 3G was discontinued with the exception of 911 services. (Now 3G is gone) The new Telematics module works fine and I pay for connected drive and run my...

    BEV E-Motor transmission/differential Oil - change?

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I replaced the gearbox fluid when I replaced spark plugs on my REX. There’s a hose on the top left side of the REX one has to remove to get better access to the vent hole. I would be careful removing the top of the REX when replacing the REX sparkplugs...

    BEV E-Motor transmission/differential Oil - change?

I’ll dig it up. It’s on a YouTube watched video list.

    BEV E-Motor transmission/differential Oil - change?

I watched a YouTube video on using the vent hole. The earlier models supposedly had a fill plug. The guy on YouTube was quite informative! He lists all parts he needed. I’m going to replace the spark plugs on the REX motor next. There is also an very informative video on YouTube on this too...

    BEV E-Motor transmission/differential Oil - change?

Just changed my gearbox fluid. Used the vent hole in my 2017 i3-REX. 500mL. GL5 standard. Didn’t use BMW oil. The local dealer does recommend changing the gearbox fluid at 50,000 miles. When asked - the BMW shop manager/foreman responded with - “Liqui Moly makes good stuff. Through ETK BMW...

My vehicle went up in flames

Since I started in Law Enforcement, I’ve become increasing skeptical of “news reports”. Not that they could be true, but I’ve found many media outlets embellish the situation or omit pertinent facts so the situation can be perceived as entirely different seemingly for the purpose of the reader...

My vehicle went up in flames

The one thing I am concerned about is a fire in or around the REX. I never looked at the schematic, but hopefully there’s a one-way check valve in the gas line feeding the REX.

My vehicle went up in flames

Interesting.. but the part left out by the “Tesla recommendation” is “if no appropriate extinguishing method is available” (ftom the circular Tesla distributes to public safety) Science is science.!
