New member 2017 Rex - Long Island NY - know a mechanic?

Hi, I work on i3's in my spare time. As far as I know I am the only one doing 60ah to 94ah upgrades in the US. I am in Baltimore, but I will be working as an entertainer at the Garden City Country Club this Sunday, Dec 8th. I will send you a private message.

    Drivetrain Malfunction error 2014 REX

Yes it makes sense to have a scanner to read the codes. a blue tooth obd2 adapter and bimmerlink is a easy to use, low cost option.

    Battery range dropping fast

No, it's just the cell temp sensors that have had their warranty extended. I haven't heard of people having trouble with them. There are at least 96 of them per pack though, so if 1 out of 1000 would go bad after 10 years, that would be a lot of cars.

Just bought a used BMW I3

Even the older 94ah batteries that I have checked still have 100% or more of their original RATED capacity. They were under rated from the factory, so this does not mean they have no degradation. They do hold up really well though, and loss of capacity is not the serious problem that it is with...

    Battery range dropping fast

45 miles range is pretty low. As has been mentioned, temperature is a big factor. Another lesser known factor is that if you don't run the battery all the way down once in a while, the car's estimation of it's battery capacity can become less accurate, usually tilting toward the safe side...

    BMW i3 FIRE

The pinto was bad because a hit in the rear could split the seam on the gas tank, spraying lots of fuel on the hot exhaust (fireball) while at the same time, the doors would jam. Even so, it only killed around 27 people, which is dwarfed by the 40,000 that die in regular vehicle accidents in the...

    Unintended acceleration

My experience makes me inclined to agree that it is the interruption of regen, but if this is a experience you can reproduce, what is the MPH increase you experience and what is the angle of the hill you are going down? Can this acceleration happen while going uphill?

    Range

I can't think of a specific document. Might just be what I have seen the car do.

    Range

I find it helpful to remember what the car shows you is not your range, it's your car's ESTIMATE of your range. It is affected by a large number of things. Let's say you live at a slightly lower altitude than the places you go. The downhill of driving on your way home took less power per mile...

Anyone over 100k miles on their car?

I put a 94ah battery from a salvage 2017 into it when it had 74k miles. The old battery worked fine and was showing 14.2 Kwh. I just wanted to learn how to do the upgrade as that skill would be valuable as more of these cars ran out of battery warranty. I upgraded my rex battery to a 94ah as well.

Vehicle For Sale 2015 I3 REX with 63.5k miles, for handy mechanic

Update: I flew down to Florida and bought this car. It was nice shape and drivable. I ran in on the rex to put less heat into the HV battery. Drove it 200 miles in heat as high as 100degrees. battery temp slowly rose as I drove, and did not go down noticeably when I parked for 2 hours. Drove it...

Anyone over 100k miles on their car?

What sends these cars to the scrapyard is expensive BMW dealership repairs. It is hard to predict when it may need one of those...unless you can find someone who can work on the car affordably.. I have 110,000 on my 2014 bev and 100,000 on my rex. I bought 7 i3 over a few years. I buy them...

    VIN number gone

On one of my i3, the dash has moved enough to block part of the vin number. I suspect your vin number is still in there.

    Custom Rex Retrofit Project

I am working with i3upgrade.cz as their installer in the USA. Part of our deal is that I don't provide info on how it is done, and of course that would not be in my interest anyway. I have 2 tested 94 Ah battery packs on hand, that I need to sell. I can install one in your car, coded and...

    Custom Rex Retrofit Project

I built a 12kw paralell battery for my first i3 BEV using all the modules from a 2019 volvo hybrid. It did extend range but experimental and you had to know what you are doing to connect and disconnect it. the car couldn't estimate its new range, as the SME didn't see the power that was...

12V battery charging at elevated voltage (~15.4V) whenever HV system is on, causing warning in ISTA, but no fault codes

I get a simular problem using ISTA with a Chinese ICOM, BUT on mine, there is nothing wrong with the car, it is just the ICOM reading a volt too high (15.something). Volt meter shows 14.7 with the DC to DC converter on. I believe ISTA recommends a power supply to keep the 12v (14.5) steady...

Vehicle For Sale 2015 I3 REX with 63.5k miles, for handy mechanic

I don't need more i3s, and you are really far, but I hereby double that offer! I have 2 i3 on the road, and 2 wrecked 2018s that have all the parts to replace the entire AC system. I bought them for the HV batteries to provide upgrades to those older i3 that need more range. I am in Baltimore MD

    Yet another drivetrain malfunction

The damaged wires were two low voltage communication connectors on the top of the KLE. (connvenience charging equipment) On the later i3 (2018 for example) those were moved to the side of the KLE

Battery Capacity Test at dealership for 2014 i3 BEV

Same thing happened to me. I pay them to do a capacity test, which I know takes a while to do, they finish way too quick and say it is fine. They provided no certificate that showed how much capacity the battery had. I have the ISTA software and was able to run the test myself...ran it 3 times...

Rex Works, tested several times by BMW (maintenance mode and driving), but...

I have not had any trouble with my rex, but despite this, it has taken me awhile to trust that the rex will work when needed. I recommend you code it for "hold state of charge" That way, you will still have significant electric range if the rex doesn't start, or stops before you are done with it.
