Buying used 2015 i3 all electric - questions on charging, range

Not sure what it's like in the sound area, but the charging options here in Eugene are pretty much crap for trips out of town. In the last year, here is what I have experienced with just 5 trips: Trip 1, north to Salem, 65 miles: Fast charger mid-trip only has one connector, and it was...

    Is REx worth it?

Every 3-6 months, I travel to a doctor appointment out of town. It's 65 miles, with only one DC charger about 40 miles into the trip. With less than ideal weather, I would not make it to the dr. office without a charge mid-way. In that case, it really means TWO charges for my 2015 to make a...

Using range extender only for electric charge

Not to derail the thread, but the REx is a "true hybrid". People are simply more familiar with parallel hybrids where both motors can power the drivetrain directly, unlike the REx, which is a serial hybrid. More specifically, it is a 'serial hybrid plug-in electric vehicle'.

How about going to a totally different rim size?

That spare is something like 4" wide. Add an inch to the width and you likely would have contact with the aluminum hub carrier. Most people just grind it a bit to fit 18s. I was not comfortable doing that with mine (and wanted fat rubber anyway), so I put 19x8 wheels and flares on.

    hello

I don't believe the fob works that way. I believe it automatically looks for the fob and wakes it up when a mode change (from ready to drive) is requested. More than one person has been caught out by that however, as they have gotten into the car with the fob and turned it on, then for whatever...

2014 REx Fuel Tank coding...how do I know it worked?

Yeah, that is actually possible due to needing to meet California's standards for the car at the time. Until somebody actually measures this however, it's a pointless discussion beyond knowing that overfilling compromises the EVAP canister.

2014 REx Fuel Tank coding...how do I know it worked?

Or perhaps they didn't convert anything but actually measured it. The point is that their published figures provide higher precision for gallons, extending it to two decimal places vs. whole numbers for liters. Did BMW lie or is their metric rounded? Only way to really know is to measure it...

    Charging 80 or 100%

KISS: i3s owners don't need to worry about this because BMW already did. End of story.

    Aux Fuel Mod

I don't think that is going to be something available on any accessory tank. I am guessing any approval would have to relate to specific installations, and the multitude of mount possibilities makes that impossible to apply on a broad level. An OEM tank in a non-OEM location likely automatically...

    Aux Fuel Mod

I'm trying to figure other ways to 'Smokey Yunick' the fuel system and that is an interesting idea I had not considered. Sadly, I doubt much more than half a gallon or so could be added by relocating that however.

2014 REx Fuel Tank coding...how do I know it worked?

Fair point, but that would buck scientific and engineering convention on the handling of significant digits. They cited a greater degree of resolution in gallons with the rounding error in the hundredths. If they were simply running it through a converter, it should only cite tenths.

2014 REx Fuel Tank coding...how do I know it worked?

Not to be contrarian, but I am not clear on your source for the 2.3 gal figure as I have only seen I01 info. This is from BMW's 2014 REx pub: Don't use their liter reference, as it represents a rounding error for significant digits that is better calculated in gallons. My interpretation of...

2014 REx Fuel Tank coding...how do I know it worked?

2.1 gal should be the nominal capacity after coding. While an additional 0.3 gallons can be trickled in, it is technically overfilling it and can potentially spill over into the evaporative venting and foul the system.

Carrying Cargo 'n Things with Our i3's...

Yep yep! The Curt lift hitch levels it out nicely too. I just try to stick to the GVWR for the car, which is almost 4000 lbs. Subtracting myself and the weight of the trailer leaves almost 500 lbs available to haul stuff.

Do the automatic intermittent wiper function stink or am I doing something wrong?

Helps a lot with this. I just wish the i3 were a little better at actually clearing water aerodynamically. At 55MPH, it's not quite enough. I've had other cars where it was, but I can't imagine a fix for that.

    i3 HV Battery Upgrade

I don't understand how they would boost charge rate, regardless of battery, as my understanding is that it would require a completely different charger setup. But perhaps that is completely decoupled from the AC charge controller and strictly a function of the HV BMS when using DC.

Do the automatic intermittent wiper function stink or am I doing something wrong?

Interesting discussion. I'd love to know it has a usable intermittent mode with the rain sensing. It won't matter though. Wiper settings never seem to be right in any car for more than a few seconds no matter how they work. :P

My vehicle went up in flames

Yes, it is mounted with 1/8" thick aluminum angle. But like the safety briefing at the hillclimbs I had installed it for, 'it's mostly there to put yourself out after you run away'. ;)

Refinished my Tera Eucalyptus wood today.

Looks great. I will never do it though due to the increased glare. Considering going with a very dark stain on mine.

My vehicle went up in flames

A 5BC will handle anything that can actually be handled without the fire brigade. An ABC is even better for all around.
