Battery Temperature, isn't 20c the sweet spot?

Does anyone know what the three blips in Rodham;'s charging graph are? There's one at the end, one about 45 minutes before the end and one about 90 minutes before end.

Battery Temperature, isn't 20c the sweet spot?

Rodham - another very interesting post, thank you for the graphs. It may help increase battery temperature if you timed the charge to finish just before preconditioning started - you would then have the residual warmth from the battery charge as a start point for the pre-con. Precon heater is...

Using range extender only for electric charge

The Range eXtending engine or ReX is a BMW W20 two-cylinder engine of 647cc producing 25kW at 4300rpm. The internal combustion engine drives a generator having an efficiency of ~94% giving 23.3kW at 4300rpm DC power at 330V. When operating, the electrical energy either goes directly to the...

BMW UK i3 REx without plugging in?

You should think of the ReX as a BeV with 40kWhrs of energy storage and not as a car with a small engine. If you want to use the car for journeys other than your commute then get a ReX otherwise BEV and a home charger. In the UK lots of home EV Chargers have tethered cables. It's only at...

Charging overhead - why L1 is so inefficient.

I guess I was trying to establish whether Tomasz started charging at 2240 or at 2150 as I'm not sure what is happening at the beginning of the graph.

    Tomaz - What's happening before 2230?

Battery Temperature, isn't 20c the sweet spot?

Rodham The graph is very interesting, thanks. As you have the equipment to measure things, would it be possible to post a graph of level 2 charging, particularly the last hour before 100% and the following hour.

    i3 top speed

With a CD of 0.3 and a frontal area of 2.38 the i3 on 125kW could do 140mph if it wasn't gear or software (or battery discharge rate) limited.

Rodham That's really good information, Thanks.

Battery Temperature, isn't 20c the sweet spot?

Rodham - Very interesting post. How did the 0.7kW vary throughout the three hours of Precon and what happened when the cabin heating started up? Our local BMW i3 R&D guy said that the battery pre-con heater was 1kW but there is a larger spike of power than this when my car precons albeit over...

Does anyone regret getting an i3?

No regrets. We use our ReX for all trips from a few miles to 400 or more. We have more rapid chargers in the UK and gas prices are higher so some decisions are easier.

    bmw i5

In October 2015 BMW CEO Harald Krueger confirmed for German magazine Die Zeit that BMW is working on a new electric car which will sit above the i3. Rumors around a future BMW i5 – Krueger has not confirmed the name – have been going around for a while now, but BMW has always refrained from...

    Charging at work

It's also important to get an hour or so at full charge and still connected so the battery management system can 'smooth out' the individual cell charge: the system will check every cell and then lower all to the lowest charge then top up again to full. The charge rate for 120v is between 0.66...

    Automatic Carwash Lockup Chaos

Last time this happened to me (with an ICE car) was when the car wash grabbed the rear wiper and bounced the car up and down a few times.

    What Spec to Order?

In England it's quite rare for anyone to buy winter tyres, certainly in the South however, when we do get snow my experience of my recent ICE cars is that front-engine/rear-drive is hopeless whereas front-engine/front-drive is much better. I assume that this is down to weight over the driving...

Wrapping the roof in white vinyl for heat rejection

On my car the roof isn't black in the same way as the bonnet (hood) but is bare 'black' Carbon Fibre - I guess they left it bare to save weight.

How do you do the coding for this?

    I drive 25,000 miles per year- I guess a lease is a no-go?

If you do 25,000 miles a year then in four years time you should be replacing it anyway, lease or not. In terms of 'obsolete' the promised doubling of battery capacity (250wHrs/kg) is expected in 2019/2020 perfectly matching your need for a replacement car once yours reaches 100,000miles.
