BMW i3 was ahead of its time AGAIN!

BMW should have followed through with the initial plan and sold i3s directly to consumers without going through the hesitant dealers under their own i-sub-brand. Like they are doing with Mini. You can see pretty obvious that the i3 was not designed with the BMW logo in mind :P Just remove...

Welcome to the BMW i3 Forum

try to run a Diesel on short routes in a cold climate. Get's half the mpg as advertised and destroys the engine very quickly. Gas engine not so much. But I had many diesel - they like it well above freezing like EVs do.

    Corrosion - BMW i3

That Ocean spray salt probably explains the rusting. "The ocean air also contains salt and minerals. In fact, the ocean contains over 70 mineral nutrients and trace elements (this is one reason why swimming in the ocean is considered therapeutic to the body – so many minerals)."...

you are correct - the body of the i3 is CFRP The drive module - where most of the bolts - is aluminum -

    Corrosion - BMW i3

Every Metal will rust. Many cars in the Rustbelt will not make for 10 years without holes in the bodywork. Just would like to get some context here - in what kind of climate environments you guys are living? But I'm wondering about rusting bolts here, since they are anodized these days and...

Which versions of the AC compressor have people had failures with?

Variable Speed A/C is not only a game changer in cars but in residential. I went from a On/Off A/C unit to a Mini Split Inverter variable unit. Everything is variable on that thing. External Fan speed, Compressor Speed, Internal Fan speed. A nominal 12.000 BTU unit can regulate between...

Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

that would be in the category of catastrophic failure. Sorry that you had so much trouble with your car. I know many i3 drivers which really had never anything done aside of regular maintenance and maybe coil spring cover. Did you had to pay those bills, or was some covered by warranty? I...

Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

the i3 BEV 2 year service is like 400-500$ even with the 100 point inspection at the BMW Dealer. I don't know about the REX oil change Service.

Edmunds TCO - Fact or Fiction?

Looks like bogus to me. If you don't have a catastrophic failure you will never spend $13k for an i3 in maintenance and repairs for 5 years. That must be for a regular ICE BMW - there I see no issue in loosing that much money since it's a BMW (Bring My Wallet) If you exclude tires - you will...

    Loads of Pictures.... incl Rex

Good that people are different ;) You got a very interesting use case for the Frunk. Most of my foods grows around my house and the once in blue moon takeout food gets delivered to my door, so that's a non issue for me. I wouldn't even have thought about that. I got my rear seats folded down...

    i3 HV Battery Upgrade

Lol :D one of the reasons I got a BEV. I keep a old $2000 Van in my Driveway - that is my REX. I drive it once a month - Chevy V8 - will probably hold forever :P BMW i3 BEV + cheap ICE vehicle = more cost effective + more versatile then only a i3 REX. Sure not everybody has the space for...

    Steering wheel top center marker

Some people are have their hands somewhere else instead of 9-10 and 2-3 range Don't forget - in many US-States there is no driving education which deserves the name. I don't even wonder why we got so many rollovers on perfectly straight streets around here. People never learn to drive under...

    Loads of Pictures.... incl Rex

That is very likely a coding leftover from the ICE cars from BMW. No second tanks in Euro i3. You can't even get a new REX in Europe anymore. The question is - how often do you need the Rex that a larger tank would make sense? I could give up the Frunk. I only opened it once in all my...

Left Aspherical Mirror Part # Differ in LH- / RH-Drive Markets?

I just bought no-name off aspherical mirrors of Amazon/ Ebay the looked fairly similar to me for both sides - I tried to install the wrong first. First - yes Aspherical is distorted - that the idea behind it. I'm from Europe and been driving this mirrors all my life. As soon as I get a...

E-Z Pass transponder under frunk lid?

yeah I just got the sticker on the right side of the rain sensor all the way up to the roofline on the glass. Works perfectly, and I'm not able to see it from both seats.

    Using the i3 to Tow

that was out of context to the other post in the thread not related to the initial posting. Just saying - that some weights are defined by suspension and some by frame. Half a ton 1000lbs is nothing - even for the i3 when you don't overdo the load on the hitch.

801252: Replacing BMW i3 air conditioning compressor

I've replaced that solenoid valve on a few other cars (Volvo, Prius) at the compressors - only the valve - let the compressor installed. You can get the valve from ebay from gray sources. Maybe that's an cheap option for the i3 issue? No idea if you can get to the part.

    bmw i3 important question

BMW claims up to 114miles with the 94ah model - I excide that every week. Usually I charge around 120-130 miles. With about 10-15 miles left. Would say 60% at 70mph - my average speed at the Odo is 40mph and my energy states 4miles/kwh. If you do some fancy math - 120 miles / 4 miles/kwh =...

2 year old i3 with low mileage

The i3 is many times a second car - and doesn't get that much exercise. Probably the best used car around at the moment - they are way to expensive new.

BMW i3 vs. Chevy Bolt -- Structural Efficiency ?

I agree the bolt can take 7000lbs more static force ONCE. But how OFTEN can I hit with 5000-10.000 lbs of force? What I see is a bashed in frame at the Bolt and an somewhat intact frame at the i3. The frame at the i3 bounces back into shape - and is ready for the next hit. Which is what...
