    Coding the i3

The Range Extender option will show up in iDrive under Settings. Select Range Extender and you'll get a screen showing you the current SOC and a check box that you can select to enable Hold State of Charge. The checkbox is only enabled when the SOC is less than 75%.

Day 1 of Extended Test Drive

I'm just outside of Boulder (and yes, its snowing now). I have a REx with ~5500 miles on it. Picked it up on December 1, so I'm averaging about 950 miles/month. For me, its been great. My commute is small, about 7 miles one way, but with hills. So on a "typical" day, I use maybe 15% of the...

    Would you buy it again?

I posted something on the Facebook group about one of the design tradeoff's that I think BMW made regarding the battery capacity (~22kWh). I think BMW was overly conservative from a financial viewpoint when they decided on the final battery capacity. If they had gone for 20-25% more capacity...

REx check engine light after 800 miles

I got the CEL a few weeks ago, occurred after running the REx to ensure I had enough juice to get up into the mountains. Been on ever since. I've tried the gas cap (actually put gas in), but the light is still there. The code I get is P0301, which, from reading, seems to be a pretty common...

    Map Updates

2014 US i3 is 3G, not 4G. Pretty sure 2015's are the same. We might see 4G in the 2016's, but I'd guess its not going to be a retrofit option on the 2014's or 2015's. It would be nice if the car let us just leverage our already paid for mobile subscriptions and/or WiFi for connectivity to do...

Newbie Question about $7,500 Credit and Tax liability

Re: traditional IRA vs. Roth IRA If you run the numbers, assuming equal returns either way and constant tax rates/brackets, the tax benefits of traditional IRA (pre-tax, pay when you withdraw) and Roth (post-tax, nothing to pay on withdrawl) end up the same. The real difference is trying to...

    Charging with 240 VAC

The Clipper Creek link was directly to a product page for a NEMA 14-30 plug EVSE. Here is a link with a good overview. http://www.plugincars.com/quick-guide-buying-your-first-home-ev-charger-126875.html

    Charging with 240 VAC

Add your location to your profile, it helps others help you out. I'm just outside of Boulder. You can buy any one of dozens of EVSE's (maybe not quite dozens, but there are many choices) that can plug into that outlet. You are probably limited to 20 AMP chargers with that plug, which will...

    I think I hate my i3 Rex...

I think of it in the sense that the REx can produce XX kWh of charge from a given amount of fuel. It runs at varying speeds, so it doesn't always produce power at the same rate, but I bet the curve is relatively flat I don't know exactly what XX is, but I can estimate (using EPA numbers) that...

    Test Drive

Not sure where you are located, but with the 20" wheels, you have no option for winter tires, or (I may be wrong on this) all-season tires.

too much rapid charging damages Li-Ion batteries

Not really a problem for those of us living outside of the UK, California or maybe Atlanta, as we really don't have the option of fast charging...

Looking to lease - some basic i3 questions

Yes, you can just keep filling the gas tank and keep driving. Out of the box, the REx will come on at 6.5% charge and will maintain that level. Its possible to drain the battery and go into "limp" mode if you are driving > 65 MPH or climbing a lot of hills once you hit the 6.5% level, as the...

    I think I hate my i3 Rex...

    "Real World" range on my i3 - Colorado, no coding to increase usable gas tank capacity, EcoPro @68 in the winter, now running Comfort @72, has ranged from: December - 3.6 mi/kWh -> 65 + 50 for 115 January - 3.8 mi/kWh -> 71 + 53 for 124 February - 3.8 mi/kWh -> 71 + 53 for 124 March - 4.2...

    Maximum electric range

I agree that warming up the battery each time you drive on a short trip reduces range, but once temps stay above 60 or so, the thermal mass of the battery should make that heating pretty negligible - the battery really won't lose too much heat if its 60 or 70 degrees out.

    Trip planning help!

Many people have used their REx for extended trips. Lots of anecdotes on the i3 Facebook page. While coding (or DVDInMotion) to enable REx Hold adds a lot of flexibility, you can theoretically (and in practice) just keep driving on the REx with stops to fill up the tank periodically. My...

    My new i3 in Maine

I've read (but can't verify) that the trouble with AM in the i3 is because the frame isn't metal, so shielding doesn't happen between the motor and the antenna. Carbon fiber is radio transparent and hence doesn't block the interference.

    Coasting versus Regen?

If you pay attention to efficiency (e.g. mi/kWh in the US or kWh/100 km elsewhere, I think), then EcoPro and EcoPro+ make a difference. EcoPro limits the power to the wheels. Its still there, you just have to press harder on the accelerator. If you are in EcoPro and accelerate hard, you'll...
