    Columbus, Ohio i3ers

I'm not in Columbus, but you might be interested in checking this out. You might not find your mystery panda (it doesn't look like any i3s are registered yet) but seems like it could be interesting. https://driveelectricearthday.org/event?eventid=3191 Drive Electric Earth Day Columbus Apr 23...

Battery Capacity Test at dealership for 2014 i3 BEV

It seems like many dealers are unfamiliar with the i3 and specifically the HV battery capacity check that us early model i3 owners are interested in. As 2014s start to age out of the warranty, BMW might be wise to notify dealers how to do the test to streamline the process. I was met with...

    2014 battery range issue

Just to level-set expectations, I would ask: "why?" and "how many more miles?" If you're trying to get 4-5 more miles, try eco pro + mode. If you're trying to get 15-20 more miles, realistically you need a different car. As to the "why": returning home with 5-10 miles range in a gas car is...

    Connecting a used 2015 i3 to app

Wow, I completely understand why you would think the app should be able to connect via Bluetooth or USB based on that error message. BMW's app/IT incompetence continues to surprise me to this day! But also for whatever it's worth, you're not really missing out on the app if you don't have...

Charting Battery Capacity/ State of Health Over Multiple Years

Range seemed to increase with the update. But it's worth noting that I've never run the car to 0 and I base all range assumptions from the GOM, which is obviously calculated off Batt Kapa Max. The other thing worth noting is that even though the change looks drastic, the battery is so small in...

Charting Battery Capacity/ State of Health Over Multiple Years

Another update since it's been about six months since the last one. I added a vertical line to indicate where the battery test & software update happened (even though it's pretty obvious in most charts). Everything is trending back downwards, but that also coincides with colder temperatures...

Vehicle Finder/ GPS Tracking not working

BMW says this is not possible (even though it is). BMW says this is not possible (and seems to have deactivated the people who have been able to do it "under the radar") Hmm... there seems to be a theme here... BMW seems to be extremely inept at technology. Yikes, that's pretty embarrassing...

    Precondition with key fob

Those of us in the US don't have a diamond shaped button. We have a much scarier looking red horn with sound waves coming out of it for triggering the car alarm from the fob. I hesitated for a while on programming climatization to replace the alarm "in case I needed it" then I realized I had...

    Illinois

Agreed that EA is making great progress and in some areas they have better coverage than the Supercharger network. I believe it was also EA's network that allowed the Kia EV6 take the record for fastest "coast to coast trip in an EV" away from Tesla. My concern/ skepticism is around those...

    Illinois

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge no DCFC company is profitable (yet). Tesla made the choice to build Superchargers as a way to sell their cars and Electrify America was created because Volkswagen negotiated their Dieselgate punishment to be Billions of dollars...

Battery in 2015 rex down to 12.1kw

Yes, I would. Especially since you're closing in on the 100k mile threshold on the HV battery warranty, assuming you're in the US. You may be gambling approx. $500, but that is peanuts compared to a replacement battery pack (possibly up to $40k...

    I had a 3G to 4G TCU upgrade to prove a point.

I wonder about this date. It seems like AT&T specified Feb of 2022 and some media outlets took that to mean Feb 22, 2022. I can't find a credible source (AT&T or BMW) that has a specific day in the shutdown date. Either way, my 2014 car still has connectivity today (Feb 23, 2022) but I know...

    i3 Hate

Tesla fans are certainly a detractor to the brand at this point, IMO. But it's also worth remembering that the loudest Tesla owners are probably the smallest segment of the group. Most people buy a product, use that product and don't visit forums or post on the internet about that product...

BMW Connected drive 3G to 4G?

4G cell phones were available to consumers in 2011. BMW may not have predicted that 3G would be shut down in its favor during the i3's expected life, but 4G hardware was certainly something they should have been aware of before the launch of the i3 in 2013.

BMW Connected drive 3G to 4G?

It is not impossible; BMW is lying when they say that. Now, it may be more complicated than simply swapping the 3G TCU for a 4G TCU (which is a part that already exists for newer i3s), but simply doing that swap seems to have worked successfully in at least one case so far...

    Yes…BMW Honors Their Battery Warranty

    Interesting, thanks!

Restraint System - Fault in airbag , belt tensioner or belt-force limiter . Continue wearing safety belt .

Do you know if your 12v battery has been replaced in the past 3-5 years? Some people report weird errors when the 12v dies, and that seems to be the lifespan of these so that might be a first place to check if yours might be original to the car.

    Yes…BMW Honors Their Battery Warranty

Thanks for reporting your experience. You probably have the only $90k i3 out there at $40k warranty claim on top of the approximate 50k MSRP for i3s :-) A few follow up questions if you don't mind: How long did you own the car? Did you notice the capacity decline at a consistent rate or was it...

To I3 REx or not to I3 REx?

I don't have a REX but I think this still applies: I think your gut is right--you will probably be alright. And if you are not, things can get expensive quickly. Taking a step back, I'd say you really want to know how likely an i3 REX that you buy is likely to be error prone, and ultimately no...

$5,000 HV Battery Repair Not Covered by Warranties

I took my 2014 BEV in for a check that you can read all about here: https://www.mybmwi3.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=17409 but the short of it is: my Kappa went from 13.0 to 15.4 (that was six months ago and it's around 14.2 now). Not sure how this happened, maybe it was the software update...
