    i3 charging LED broken?

    Does the vehicle actually charge?

    BMW Produced its 200,000th i3

I have thoroughly enjoyed my i3, and bought it new in June 2014. Doesn't have all that many miles on it, but the vast majority were 1-7 mile trips around town where an ICE would get eaten up since it would rarely get fully warmed up, especially in the wintertime. But, I only have one garage...

    BMW Produced its 200,000th i3

Way back at the beginning, it was indicated that about the best maximum volume for the method BMW envisioned for the i3 build with the CFRP frame was in the order of 50K/year. So, it looks like their decision held up. If the volume was larger, a different technique would have been called for...

    Service threat from BMW Canada

If you maintain any records of the work done, BMW has no grounds, but if you haven't, there could be an issue. But, I haven't read all of the fine print of the contract that might require it be done by an authorized service center. In the US, that wouldn't hold up, I don't think, but you would...

A vs M in Climate Control

Originally from what I remember, cabin filter change recommendations were time based, but now are distance. That may be reasonable, but can be problematic in some situations like say you drive lots of dirt roads, or often get some really polluted air whether from pollen, smoke, diesel fumes, or...

A vs M in Climate Control

They used to be...BMW has changed the coverage, depending on the MY, so you'd have to ask, or it would be covered in the warranty documents but those can be harder to decipher sometimes.

    Hands free trunk release

THey did things like mould pockets in the CFRP frame to accommodate wiring harnesses so it didn't require clamps and extra fasteners. Anyway, adding a motor and sensor, while possible, won't be particularly easy or cheap. It's one thing to add a feature that was an option, but not present...

    Hands free trunk release

When BMW designed the i3, they said in their press that they sweated every gram to try to keep the vehicle as light as possible and to maximize range...that's one reason why they didn't include electric seat controls...I can't see them designing that feature in, and I agree, I don't think it...

    i3 Winter tires - 2017 vs 2020 ReX

Those winter tires will work just fine in place of the staggered set. I used them for years on mine without issues. If the tires are getting old and you're ready to replace them (industry suggests a maximum of 6-years, regardless of tread depth), I'd get a set of the Nokian R3's instead...I...

    Can't get 2014 I3 Rex into Drive

It's not a bad idea on any battery replacement to charge it up prior to installation. While they might have a nearly full charge coming out of the factory, and an AGM battery is pretty good about self-discharge, it never hurts to charge it up first and might solve some problems getting going again.

    BMW i3 Outdoor Car Cover

I have the OEM partial cover that does keep the interior quite a bit cooler as it covers the front windshield, and the roof over the two front doors. If your goal is to protect the whole vehicle, it isn't for you, but I've found it quite useful over the years. In the winter, especially if you...

    Trouble clearing brake warning

The page I linked to implies BMW uses two different types of sensors depending on maybe market or options. They are not interchangeable. I do not know what would happen if you had the wrong type, or if the connector is even the same. One has a resistor in it and gives a two-stage warning, the...

    Trouble clearing brake warning

If the indicator lamp came on, I'm pretty sure you have to replace the wear sensor in addition to the brake pads. The wear sensor, depending on the type, gets literally worn down as the brakes approach the end of their life, and opens a circuit that is detected by the computer. The only way to...

Where should I get my i3 alignments done?

Telltale signs of needing an alignment requires both a visual inspection and a careful observation of how the vehicle drives along with being religious about keeping your tire pressure correct. An obvious pull, or change in how the steering wheel is oriented while trying to go straight, or it...

    Solid State Battery Progress

MB recently announced they will be offering public busses with solid state batteries. So, the beginnings are here (almost!). Once they get some experience with them, it's likely that they will show up in more consumer applications. So, progress is being made.

Rex not coming on at 6%?

While you would want to test that it comes one when it should, to verify that it can turn on, you could force it to run in the emissions test mode once you get the SOC below (I think) 75%, or, if you program the ability to force it on via menu like the rest of the world can do.

    Battery Replacement Under Warranty

FWIW, the conversion from ACV to DCV to charge the batteries is not 100% efficient, not counting whatever power might be used for fans associated with heating or cooling in the process. At 240vac, I've seen numbers around 95% efficiency in the conversion process.

    Buying a 2017 94ah vs. 2014-15Rex

Discharge cycles tend to degrade the battery. One 'full' cycle is from 0 back up to 100%, and ten charges from 90-100% also equal one cycle. So, a larger battery pack over the same number of miles will experience fewer discharge cycles and at least should see a longer useable life. It really...
