3 phase charging of 60Ah 2014 model with 7,4kW onboard charger

What voltage do you get if you measure across one phase to another? I'd guess, probably 220-vac or so? A few EVSE devices have internally programmable pilot signal levels so you can match the supply to the signal sent to the vehicle, so you don't overload anything. There are settings in...

    Will I make it home?

SOmewhere in 2017, the vehicles ended up with a larger battery. With one of those with the smaller battery, in the winter, it would be maybe close, but not a problem in the summer. If you could charge at work, no problem and you'd probably be able to stay entirely on electricity both ways.

    BEV No Heat, Again...

FWIW, I've seen the i3 pull more than 20A at 240vac during a precondition with departure time set. IOW, the OUC is not large enough to keep the battery full when you select that option. The battery heater is 1Kw, and I'd guess the cabin heater is larger, then throw in the fans and it adds up.

3 phase charging of 60Ah 2014 model with 7,4kW onboard charger

The modules are too expensive to risk it IMHO. WIthout knowing a bit more about the internal operation, you could end up burning one or more out.

    How to test battery capacity?

If you can afford to wait, and you have something like a Kilowatt meter, you could drive until nearly empty, then hook it up with the OUC plugged into the Kilowatt meter, and measure how much it takes to reach full. Now, that's not an absolute result since there's some energy lost in the...

    Why is the roof black?

fwiw, the reason why the moonroof wasn't available for the first couple of years is that the DOT rules require it to have metal supports. The rest of the world was getting them with the CFRP roofs which are actually stronger. I wasn't aware that they made the entire roof out of metal for the...

    Getting unhappy with fuel cover

A number of years ago, I had an Audi A6. FWIW, the fuel sold in Europe must have a very low sulfur content. The US allowed more. The fuel level sensors in the Audi failed two times, then, Audi ended up switching the contacts to gold plated ones...those worked. It sounds like that sort of...

12 V battery replacement suggestions needed

Check with the dealer's service department to be sure, but I read somewhere that after a certain software build, you don't need to disconnect the HV battery when charging the 12vdc battery. It's probably better to do that, but to get into the vehicle, you may need the key. Popping out the...

My lovely i3 wont charge and charger doesn't lock in

It's a 20Ah, AGM battery https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part?id=1Z22-EUR-12-2013-I01-BMW_i-i3_60Ah&mg=61&sg=30&diagId=61_3350&q=61219321815 They tend to source them locally, or maybe in your case, from Europe. Here are the specs for the one used in US vehicles...

My lovely i3 wont charge and charger doesn't lock in

There's a switch in the button of the handle. If that is not fully up, the interlocks will not allow the charging to start. It might be useful to try the OUC (the device supplied with the vehicle) to see if it charges the vehicle, albeit slowly. But, if the 12vdc battery is weak, all bets are...

    BMW Produced its 200,000th i3

As battery tech keeps improving, at least for a city car as it was designed, it becomes yet a little more useful to some additional people. Range anxiety is still probably the biggest detriment to EV adoption. For many people, once they've lived with one, assuming their expectations aren't...

    How do I find a junkyard i3?

Be very careful buying any harness for any BMW. Unlike cars of old that might use one harness with lots of maybe unused plugs or sockets on them, BMW tends to not do that, and only include what is specifically needed for that vehicle as specified during the build. It can make finding a...

New owner - is it normal for the heating to have this much impact on range?

It sounds like you're in the UK, but answers will be better if you indicate at least your country in your profile so it's displayed. The cable supplied is, I think, a 10A device, and when plugged into the nominal 220-vac, would pass about 2200W into the vehicle. Some of that is used by the...

Car doesn't switch over to REX.

https://bimmercode.app/cars/i3/ You need to enable the range extender menu. Once that is enabled, on iDrive, you can set when you want the REx to turn on. Note, 2017 and newer i3's already use the full fuel tank, so there's nothing to adjust. This goes back to a California rule about using...

    Just bought one from Carmax

If the receptacle you plugged the OUC into was worn, or a connection was loose, on a high current device, things can get hot enough to melt. The plug should have some significant resistance when pushing it in. If it doesn't, replace the receptacle. The OUC is basically a smart on/off...

    Compass in the Mirror

GPS can only calculate orientation when you're moving. The vehicle does have other sensors that can tell the nav that you've moved, or reversed, so can help with that if you had a gps fix prior and can keep track of where you are, at least for awhile, if you're driving through say a long tunnel...

Is 40 twice as fast as 20?

Makes sense...240*16=3840W versus 120*10=1200W. Throw in the fact that 240vac is more efficient, and easily 3x faster. Since the i3 can handle nearly twice that, though, a 30-32 or larger unit would double that yet again.

    Why is the roof black?

You can find it discounted, but yes, it was not inexpensive, but what from BMW is 'cheap'? My experience is that it keeps the interior probably 20-30 degrees cooler when on, and, with the large front windscreen, those take up a lot of space when you store them. FWIW, the little window in the...

    adaptive cruise control dropping out

When I ordered my first BMW, I didn't opt for the ACC, but it was on the i3 that I wanted, so why not? I have found it to be very useful, and ordered it on my latest vehicle, too. I think the reason why BMW chose to simply rely on the camera was power. A radar would likely end up using more...

Charge port door actuator died - common issue?

It's an electro-mechanical device...they wear out over time and use. Regardless of the miles, you may have opened it lots if you're taking mostly shorter trips and plugging in when getting home, versus someone who nearly empties their battery before they recharge...IOW, miles isn't a good...
