    Solid State Battery Progress

One company, after nearly 10-years of development had a press release this week on the status of their entry into solid state batteries. They claim interest in including it in new vehicles as early as 2025. Also, VW has been working with another company, and claim they should have some in...

    BEV No Heat, Again...

I've had the range sit at a constant level while driving as much as 13-miles, but that's dependent on a change in use patterns. I have not sat and monitored my meter, so only have a few samples of the current going into my i3. I have a fairly steep driveway, and do note it using the brakes...

    Range Issues - New Owner

If, during showing the vehicle, people sat in it, turned it on, cranked up the HVAC and sat there for awhile, there could have been a large load on the battery, but no miles driven. The readout is an estimate on how the vehicle was last used, and an expectation that the same use pattern will...

    Battery Replacement Under Warranty

This sounds like a true battery failure and, if testing verifies, should qualify for a replacement battery. The estimated range and hidden menu readouts can be fooled, so you should drive it a bit to see if that changes.

    Class Action Lawsuit

Some stories I read said that BMW really didn't want to include the REx option at all but it was pushed by marketing. The vehicle is designed as a city car for commuting, not as a cross-country one but it's a tribute to the design that people can use it that way. The thing is a serial hybrid...

    BEV No Heat, Again...

FWIW, during the summer, I had a situation where mine was not cooling well, if at all. The compressor was working fine, but a couple of valves were sticking. It could easily stuck the other way so it can't provide heat, as it's the same pump. They replaced the valves...parts and labor ended...

Ran the REX for the first time....

The REx rpm, and thus the general sound level, will vary considerably depending on the current SOC on the battery, and the amount of energy it thinks it needs to supply. It can go from barely at idle to its maximum speed, and the sound level will change. The vehicle also adjusts the REx some...

    Red LED on Dash

It could be a light intensity (photo sensor). During the day, place your finger over it and see if the display brightness changes. If they get dimmer, it's not a temperature sensor.

    Charging speed

ONly a few countries get a 3-phase acv input i3, and Belgium may be one of the few or only one in Europe. The standard input everywhere else is a single phase that will operate on about 100-250vac and then, the maximum input power is 7400W, but is more limited by the number of amps the device...

    Embarrassed by the horn?

The thing that annoys me about the horn is the slight delay before it actually sounds. This is a function of low priority of the CANBUS channel it is on, I think. The horn 'button' is telling the computer via a serial message to turn on the horn which then sends another signal to the horn to...

    Best fuel (octane) for Rex

I bought an X5 45e hybrid in September - have used about 1/8th tank of fuel in it so far. If I keep going like I am, I may not need to buy any fuel for it for 4-5 more months as most of my driving is well within its EV capabilities. I might consider putting some fuel stabilizer in it, too...

    i3 being seen as Ugly

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. There are a lot of men and women out there that think their partners are beautiful. That isn't the way others may view them. Same with a vehicle.

    Hidden menu > correction factor

Not sure exactly what you're asking here. The token to get into the menu is the sum of the last 5 digits of the VIN if I remember correctly. Someone posted a video of how to access it.

    BEV No Heat, Again...

The amount of power surprised me. I do not think the meter is wrong, as it shows about 30A (my normal acv=247) when charging the battery shortly after starting up. This case, the battery was full, but it was in the middle of a departure time, well, in the segment of the program when it finally...

    BEV No Heat, Again...

True, but do you know of any 20A/120vac EVSEs? Mine is 240vac, and I saw 20A when preconditioning while a departure time was set.

    Best fuel (octane) for Rex

Ethanol content will vary by where you're located. If the state is part of the CARB air quality, it will have ethanol in it. If it's not, it may not. The higher grades of gasoline generally have higher levels of detergents in them. Plus, you should check the website for whether the supplier...

Tire Options in November 2020 ?

It helps if you put your general location in your profile since what may be good for one country, may not be for others! The OEM winter tire set can sometimes be a good buy. Those pizza wheels retail for about $500, but you can buy the winter tires for less than that already mounted, balanced...

    i3 Weight

The CFRP roof on most i3s probably saves money over stamping a steel one as it's made out of scraps from building the body. At least in the USA, federal regulations require metal around a sunroof. This is one reason why we did not get that option here for the first several years...the petition...

    Charging time household plug

If you buy a plug-in EVSE, make sure that the socket and associated wiring supporting it are sufficient for the EVSE you choose. The common dryer plug is rated at 50A, but they allow it to be used on a 40A circuit. So, if you only looked at the socket, you cannot assume it is a 50A circuit...

    Getting unhappy with fuel cover

Europe has some pretty dense cities with roads that go back centuries. Some of the larger ones now try to control pollution by charging fees to drive there, and exempt EVs. As part of that all, they have a much lower sulphur content requirement on fuels than we do in the USA. As a result of...
